Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.
The 17th House District is located in portions of Monroe and Wayne County in Southeast Michigan.
Representative Joe Bellino is running for his second term in office. He won a very contentions race in 2016 while riding the Trump wave. Running against him is Democratic candidate Michelle LaVoy, the wife of former Representative Bill LaVoy for which Bellino bested. The district has a 53% Republican base and Trump remains popular in this district which will provide an obvious advantage to incumbent Bellino. This seat was recently highlighted by the New York Times as a test on where union voters will land on election day: In Michigan, Female Candidates Target a Key Trump Bloc: Union Voters.
