This week, Representative Gary Glenn (R-Midland) introduced legislation making reforms to Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) laws. Under the bill as introduced, state departments would be required to fulfill FOIA requests within sixty-days of the initial requests. His measure is in response to a public statement issued by Attorney General Bill Schuette in December outlining how Michigan’s FOIA does not specify a particular timeline for when a state department must fulfill a request for information. The introduction of the bill coincides with Sunshine Week, which centers around the importance of open government and freedom of information. The bill was referred to the House Oversight Committee for consideration.
