Education Department Rolls Out Additional Dashboard Metrics

Jan 25, 2019

The Michigan Department of Education rolled out Phase II of their online Parent Dashboard for School Transparency. The dashboard includes 20 original factors or measures that parents and other stakeholders have indicated are important to them when evaluating a school’s quality. “In 2017 the State Board of Education requested the department to create a dashboard that would help parents be better informed when choosing where to send their child to school,” explained Rudy Hobbs of MLC.

Additionally, the tool can be used to compare a school’s performance with the average performance of other similar Michigan schools.

Original dashboard metrics include:

  • State assessment performance and progress
  • Students with on-track attendance
  • English learner progress
  • Graduation and dropout rates
  • Advanced coursework

New metrics include:

  • Teacher retention
  • Qualified teaching staff
  • Teacher years of experience

Also included in the Phase II rollout is enhanced school search and mapping functions and the ability to view the schools included in peer-average calculations for each metric. The department is currently working on a Phase III rollout, however the details and launch date have not yet been announced.
